Russian forces launched hours-long waves of drone and missile attacks on Kyiv from the evening of Sept. 27 into the early hours of Sept. 28, killing and injuring civilians and damaging buildings and other infrastructure across the Ukrainian capital, according to Ukrainian officials.

Two people were killed and four others injured on the evening of Sept. 27 when a Russian strike hit the Stolichny wholesale food market on the outskirts of Kyiv, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. The attack sparked a fire at the market, with footage from the scene showing flames engulfing vehicles in the parking area.

Air defense systems were activated over central Kyiv as explosions were heard across the city during a nine-hour air raid alert. According to a Kyiv Independent journalist at the scene, authorities temporarily halted trains scheduled to depart during the attack and moved passengers to underground shelters.

Further attacks were reported in Kyiv overnight on Sept. 28. In the Podil district, a Russian drone struck an unspecified non-residential building, according to Ukrainian authorities and eyewitness reports. The State Emergency Service said three people were injured in the area.

Another person was injured in the Holosiivskyi district after a drone struck a two-story residential building, authorities said.

Several fires also broke out in different parts of the capital, including at office buildings in the Pecherskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts. Klitschko separately reported that a gas station caught fire in the Obolonskyi district.

The latest strikes followed another day of attacks across Kyiv. Klitschko said nine additional people were injured in attacks on the capital during the day, with six requiring hospitalization, including one child.

The latest barrage came after Russian forces launched another major attack on Kyiv during the night of Sept. 26–27, when strikes killed one person and injured at least five others, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The attacks on Kyiv were part of a broader wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said Russian attacks between Sept. 26 and 27 killed 14 people and injured at least 57 others across the country.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had intensified its aerial campaign over the past week, launching more than 2,200 attack drones, around 1,650 aerial bombs and 38 missiles, including a significant number of ballistic missiles.

“The Russians launched more than 2,200 attack drones against Ukraine, as well as around 1,650 aerial bombs and 38 missiles of various types, a significant number of them ballistic missiles,” Zelensky said.

The repeated strikes have placed Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities under prolonged air raid alerts, while emergency services continue to respond to fires, damaged buildings and civilian casualties following the attacks. (ILKHA)
