Russia delivers advanced Su-30SM2 fighter jets to Belarus

Russia has delivered a batch of advanced Sukhoi Su-30SM2 fighter-bombers to the Belarusian Air Force, defying international sanctions and the demands of its ongoing war effort.
Images circulating online show at least two of the modernized jets, transferred from Russia’s Irkutsk Aviation Plant to Belarus, as part of an agreement reportedly involving 12 aircraft from the sophisticated Flanker family.
The delivery marks a significant step in Belarus’ efforts to modernize its aging air force, which currently relies on Soviet-era MiG-29BM, MiG-29S fighters, and Su-25 ground-attack jets. The Su-30SM2, an upgraded version of the Su-30SM, features advanced systems from Russia’s Su-35S, including the Irbis-E radar and powerful AL-41F-1S engines, enhancing combat performance and situational awareness. Belarus has also acquired Yak-130 jet trainers to bolster pilot training.
Despite Western sanctions and the strain of over three years of conflict, Russia’s military-industrial complex, led by the United Aircraft Corporation, continues to produce and export advanced weaponry. The delivery underscores Moscow’s commitment to strengthening military ties with Belarus, a close ally, and follows Russia’s recent export of Su-30SME fighters to Myanmar in January 2025. Reports also suggest potential sales of Su-35S and Su-34 aircraft to nations like Algeria.
The transfer highlights Russia’s resilience in maintaining its defense industry and signals its intent to deepen military-technical cooperation with non-Western allies amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. (ILKHA)
