Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and U.S. President Joe Biden held a phone call on Tuesday to discuss joint mediation efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The conversation also touched on the latest developments in Gaza and the strategic relations between the two nations, according to statements from both the Amiri Diwan and the White House.
The Amiri Diwan, the sovereign body and administrative office of the Emir, released a statement highlighting the discussion's focus on mediation efforts and the importance of strategic cooperation between Qatar and the United States. The White House statement expressed President Biden's gratitude for Sheikh Tamim's leadership in facilitating negotiations that are now in their final stages.
"President Biden thanked Sheikh Tamim for his determined leadership in the facilitation of negotiations that have now reached a final stage," the White House statement read. Both leaders emphasized the urgency of concluding the peace process as soon as possible and agreed to maintain close coordination in the coming days.
Qatar has played a pivotal role as a mediator in the Middle East, partnering with the United States and Egypt to seek an end to the conflict in Gaza. Since the outbreak of Israeli aggression in October last year, these nations have been actively involved in peace efforts to resolve the prolonged conflict.
However, recent developments have complicated the peace process. The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran has led to a stalemate in the negotiations and a sudden escalation in regional tensions. Despite these challenges, Qatar and the United States remain committed to finding a resolution and ending the violence in Gaza.
