Pakistan confirmed on Thursday that negotiations between the United States and Iran aimed at reducing regional tensions and addressing the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz remain ongoing despite escalating military confrontations across the Middle East.

Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman Tahir Andrabi said discussions between Washington and Tehran are continuing, with a particular focus on easing tensions surrounding the strategically vital waterway.

"Negotiations between the two sides are ongoing, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz and with the aim of de-escalation," Andrabi said.

He noted that Pakistan is continuing its diplomatic efforts to encourage both countries to return to the negotiating table and uphold the commitments outlined in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in June last year under Islamabad's mediation.

According to Andrabi, the agreement was designed to help end hostilities and establish a framework for continued dialogue between the two sides.

The Pakistani official said Islamabad remains committed to facilitating diplomatic engagement and reducing tensions in the region, emphasizing that dialogue remains the most effective path toward resolving the crisis.

Pakistan has urged both Washington and Tehran to fully implement the provisions of the memorandum, including continuing technical discussions aimed at addressing outstanding issues.

"Our country encourages both the United States and Iran to fully comply with their commitments to conduct technical discussions in accordance with the provisions of the memorandum," Andrabi said.

The confirmation comes as tensions remain high across the Middle East following recent military exchanges and heightened concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route through which a significant share of the world's oil exports passes.

Pakistan has repeatedly called for restraint by all parties and has offered its support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at preventing further escalation and promoting regional stability. (ILKHA)
