A drone attack on the Khor Mor gas field in Iraq's Kurdistan Region killed four Yemeni nationals on Friday evening, according to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
The attack, which targeted the same location hit in January, also significantly impacted electricity generation in the region.
The targeted gas field is located in Chamchamal and operated by the UAE-based Dana Gas. Local authorities confirmed the area was still under construction at the time of the latest incident.
KRG President Nechirvan Barzani strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing the threat it poses to regional stability. He urged Iraqi authorities to identify and prosecute the perpetrators regardless of their affiliation.
KRG spokesperson Peshawa Hawramani labelled the attack as "terrorism" and reported the deaths of four Yemeni nationals. Hawramani further stated that the attack caused significant damage to the gas field and drastically reduced electricity production. He called on the Iraqi federal government to locate those responsible and prevent future attacks.
The attack resulted in a halt of gas supplies to power plants, causing a drop in electricity generation by nearly 2,500 megawatts according to a joint statement from the KRG's electricity and natural resources ministries. Government officials are currently working to restore power production.
The Khor Mor gas field has been targeted multiple times in recent years, with reports suggesting involvement of Iranian-affiliated Iraqi militia groups. While no group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani indicated initial information suggests the attack originated from "a nearby region within Iraq."
