Death toll from Russia fireworks factory fire rises to 14
The death toll from a fire at a fireworks factory in Russia's Yaroslavl region has risen to 14, while emergency crews continue recovery operations at the site, authorities said.
According to Russia's state-run TASS news agency, citing emergency services, the fire broke out late Sunday at a pyrotechnics factory in the village of Kubrinsk near the town of Pereslavl-Zalessky.
Yaroslavl Region Governor Mikhail Yevrayev confirmed the fatalities in a post on Telegram, saying that search and recovery efforts were continuing with nearly 200 emergency personnel deployed to the scene.
The governor also announced a state of emergency in the Pereslavl-Zalessky district following the incident.
The fire spread from the factory to two nearby buildings before firefighters succeeded in bringing the blaze under control. Authorities said one person was injured and remains hospitalized, while emergency teams continue clearing debris to ensure no victims remain trapped.
Russian investigators have opened a criminal case on suspicion of violations of industrial safety regulations that may have led to the disaster.
Authorities confirmed that the factory's general director has been detained as part of the investigation.
Officials said specialists are continuing to examine the scene to determine the exact cause of the fire, while investigators are collecting evidence and questioning witnesses.(ILKHA)
