Türkiye welcomes peace deal between DRC and M23

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement welcoming the recent Declaration of Principles signed between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the March 23 Movement (M23), under the mediation of the State of Qatar.
The declaration is seen as a significant development toward achieving a peaceful and lasting resolution to the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, which has witnessed years of violence, displacement, and humanitarian suffering.
“We welcome the Declaration of Principles signed between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and M23 under the facilitation of Qatar,” the ministry’s statement read. “This Declaration constitutes an important step toward a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict in the east of the DRC.”
Ankara also expressed appreciation for the efforts of international and regional actors in facilitating the agreement. The statement singled out the State of Qatar, the East African Community (EAC), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for their “constructive contributions to the stabilisation and development of the Great Lakes region.”
The Turkish government reaffirmed its commitment to peacebuilding on the African continent, stating: “Türkiye will continue to support all efforts aimed at promoting peace, security, and stability in Africa.”
The conflict in eastern DRC, involving the M23 rebel group and government forces, has drawn regional concern for years due to its devastating humanitarian toll. The latest diplomatic breakthrough has been welcomed by multiple governments and international observers as a potential turning point in efforts to end the violence and restore stability.
Türkiye has actively deepened its diplomatic and developmental engagement with African nations in recent years, often positioning itself as a supporter of regional peace initiatives and humanitarian efforts across the continent. (ILKHA)
