Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will visit Azerbaijan on Sept. 15-16, Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday, as the two close allies seek to deepen strategic cooperation and coordinate on regional developments.

The ministry announced the visit in a brief statement, saying Fidan would travel to Azerbaijan for a two-day visit.

During the visit, Fidan is expected to hold bilateral and delegation-level talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov. He is also expected to meet Azerbaijani Defence Minister Zakir Hasanov and be received by President Ilham Aliyev, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.

The talks are expected to cover bilateral relations, including defence, energy, trade and transport cooperation, as well as regional and international developments.

The visit comes after Fidan, Bayramov and Georgia's foreign minister held the 10th trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Georgia in Istanbul in June. The three countries signed the Istanbul Declaration and discussed regional cooperation and connectivity.

Fidan's Azerbaijan trip also follows his Sept. 13-14 visit to Syria, where he held talks with senior Syrian officials on bilateral relations, regional security and efforts to strengthen Syria's stability and territorial integrity.

Türkiye and Azerbaijan maintain close political and security ties and have described their relationship as one based on a “two states, one nation” principle. Ankara has consistently backed Baku's efforts to strengthen regional connectivity and advance a lasting peace process in the South Caucasus. (ILKHA)
