Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrives in Ankara for high-level talks
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived at Ankara's Esenboğa Airport on Wednesday ahead of a series of high-level meetings with Turkish officials, marking another step in the evolving diplomatic engagement between Türkiye and Syria.
Al-Sharaa was welcomed at the airport by senior Turkish officials before proceeding to the capital, where he is expected to hold talks focused on bilateral relations, regional security, border stability, counterterrorism cooperation, and the return of Syrian refugees.
The visit comes at a time of intensified diplomatic efforts between Ankara and Damascus following months of dialogue aimed at normalizing ties after more than a decade of strained relations.
Officials are expected to discuss developments in northern Syria, the fight against terrorist organizations, border security, humanitarian issues, and mechanisms to facilitate the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of Syrian refugees residing in Türkiye.
The leaders are also expected to exchange views on broader regional developments, including the security situation in the Middle East, recent tensions involving Iran and Israel, and efforts to promote regional stability through diplomatic cooperation.
The visit follows a series of contacts between Turkish and Syrian officials in recent months, reflecting both countries' interest in expanding cooperation on shared security concerns and economic recovery.
Observers say discussions could also cover the reopening of additional border crossings, trade and transportation links, energy cooperation, and reconstruction efforts in Syria as Damascus seeks greater regional engagement following years of conflict.
Türkiye has consistently emphasized that lasting stability in Syria depends on preserving the country's territorial integrity, eliminating terrorist threats along its southern border, and supporting a political process that ensures peace and security for the Syrian people.
Al-Sharaa's visit is expected to conclude with a joint statement outlining areas of cooperation and reaffirming both countries' commitment to continued dialogue on issues of mutual interest. (ILKHA)
