Magnitude 5.4 earthquake strikes near Paphos, Cyprus
A significant earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 struck off the coast of Cyprus on Wednesday morning, sending tremors across the region.
The quake was detected at 11:31 a.m. local time, with its epicentre located approximately 20 kilometres northeast of the city of Paphos, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
The tremor was felt widely across the island, including in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Reports also confirmed it was felt in coastal cities in southern Türkiye, such as Antalya and Adana.
There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries.
Seismologists are continuing to analyse data, and further updates on the earthquake's precise depth and characteristics are expected. (ILKHA)
