Former Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu İnterrogated in espionage case
Former Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was recently arrested, has been questioned as part of an ongoing espionage investigation, according to reports from local sources.
The interrogation reportedly took place at Istanbul’s Çağlayan Courthouse and lasted around three hours. Hundreds of İmamoğlu’s supporters gathered outside the courthouse throughout the proceedings, carrying his photos and chanting slogans demanding his release.
According to available information, the investigation was launched two days ago and is connected to an espionage case initiated following the detention of Hüseyin Gün, who was arrested on July 4.
Turkish media reports that Gün is accused of maintaining links with the FETÖ network, the PKK, and representatives of several foreign states. The indictment alleges that he was involved in financing mass unrest, transmitting classified information, and sharing data related to the 2019 municipal elections in line with the interests of these groups.
The charges further claim that Gün provided foreign actors with sensitive information concerning Turkish Armed Forces’ weapon systems.
A report issued by Turkey’s Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) stated that despite having no registered commercial activity, Gün conducted significant financial operations — including undocumented cash transactions totaling 85 million Turkish lira (approximately 2 million U.S. dollars).
Investigators also allege that Gün met with Mustafa Özcan, described in official documents as “FETÖ’s UK imam,” and received instructions from him.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the precise link between İmamoğlu and Gün, though judicial sources indicate that the mayor’s questioning was focused on potential ties and communications uncovered during the broader espionage probe. (ILKHA)
