Life expectancy in Türkiye rises to 78.5 years, TurkStat reports
Life expectancy at birth in Türkiye has increased to 78.5 years in the 2023–2025 period, up from 78.1 years recorded in 2022–2024, according to data released on Wednesday by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).
The agency said the figures are based on current mortality patterns and represent the average number of years a newborn is expected to live under prevailing conditions.
Women Continue to Outlive Men
According to the report, women in Türkiye continue to have a significantly higher life expectancy than men.
Life expectancy at birth for men rose from 75.5 years to 75.9 years, while for women it increased from 80.7 years to 81.1 years. The gap between the sexes remained 5.2 years, with women expected to live longer on average.
Remaining Life Expectancy by Age
TurkStat also published estimates of average remaining life expectancy at different stages of life.
A person aged 15, considered the beginning of working age, is expected to live an additional 64.7 years on average. The remaining life expectancy is 62.1 years for men and 67.3 years for women.
For individuals aged 30, the average remaining life expectancy stands at 50.3 years, including 47.8 years for men and 52.7 years for women.
At 50 years of age, people in Türkiye are expected to live another 31.3 years on average. Men have a remaining life expectancy of 29 years, compared with 33.4 years for women.
Those reaching the age of 65 are expected to live an average of 18.4 more years, with men projected to live an additional 16.7 years and women 20 years. On average, women aged 65 are expected to outlive men by 3.3 years.
Higher Education Linked to Longer Life
The report found a strong relationship between educational attainment and longevity.
According to TurkStat, life expectancy increases as education levels rise, with individuals holding higher educational qualifications living longer than those with lower levels of education.
Among 30-year-olds, the difference in life expectancy between individuals with less than upper secondary education and those with tertiary education was 5.1 years for men and 4.6 years for women, highlighting the impact of education on long-term health outcomes.
Healthy Life Expectancy
The report also examined healthy life years, which measure the number of years a person is expected to live without health conditions that limit daily activities.
Healthy life expectancy at birth was estimated at 58 years overall.
Men were found to have a healthy life expectancy of 59.1 years, while women were expected to enjoy 56.9 healthy years, meaning men spend an average of 2.2 more years in good health despite having a shorter overall lifespan.
The latest findings indicate that while overall life expectancy in Türkiye continues to improve, significant differences remain based on gender and educational attainment, underscoring the role of socioeconomic factors in shaping health and longevity. (ILKHA)
