A total of 171,887 road motor vehicles were registered in Turkey in August, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) confirmed on Wednesday.

Motorcycles accounted for the largest share of newly registered vehicles at 47.5%, followed by cars at 38.4%, small trucks at 9.6%, tractors at 1.6%, trucks at 1.6%, minibuses at 0.8%, buses at 0.4% and special-purpose vehicles at 0.1%.

The number of newly registered road vehicles fell 17.2% in August compared with the previous month.

On a monthly basis, registrations of buses increased by 0.3%, while those of minibuses rose by 12.2%. Registrations declined by 39.5% for special-purpose vehicles, 32% for trucks, 18.2% for motorcycles, 16.1% for cars and 15.5% for tractors.

Vehicle registrations fall 20.1% year-on-year

Compared with August 2025, the number of newly registered road vehicles decreased by 20.1%.

Registrations increased by 12.9% for buses and 0.7% for minibuses, while falling by 30.5% for cars, 14% for special-purpose vehicles, 13.6% for motorcycles, 11.7% for tractors, 10.4% for trucks and 4.7% for small trucks.

By the end of August, the total number of registered road motor vehicles in Turkey had reached 34,911,879.

Cars accounted for 51.7% of the total fleet, followed by motorcycles at 21.8%, small trucks at 14.3%, tractors at 6.7%, trucks at 3%, minibuses at 1.6%, buses at 0.6% and special-purpose vehicles at 0.3%.

More than 917,000 vehicles change hands

A total of 917,143 road motor vehicles were transferred to new owners in August.

Cars made up 66.4% of these transfers, followed by small trucks at 13.7%, motorcycles at 12.5%, tractors at 3%, trucks at 1.9%, minibuses at 1.8%, buses at 0.5% and special-purpose vehicles at 0.2%.

A total of 66,048 cars were newly registered in August.

Renault led the market for newly registered cars with a 12.3% share, followed by Volkswagen at 8.5%, Hyundai at 8.4%, Turkey's Togg at 7.3% and Toyota at 7.2%.

Peugeot accounted for 5.8%, Skoda 5.2%, Mercedes-Benz 4.6%, Citroen 4.3%, Kia 4.2%, Fiat 3.7%, Nissan 3.4%, Opel 3.1%, Volvo 2.8%, Dacia 2.4%, BMW 2.4%, Chery 2.3%, Audi 2%, Honda 1.5% and Jeep 1.2%. Other brands accounted for 7.4%.

Vehicle registrations down 14.1% in January-August

During the January-August period, 1,342,134 road motor vehicles were registered, down 14.1% from the same period of the previous year.

Meanwhile, the number of vehicles withdrawn from registration increased by 23.1% to 41,641.

As a result, the total increase in the number of registered road vehicles during the first eight months of the year stood at 1,300,493.

Gasoline remains the most common fuel among newly registered cars

Of the 600,859 cars registered between January and August, gasoline-powered vehicles accounted for 40.8% of registrations.

Hybrid cars represented 32.1%, followed by electric vehicles at 18.1%, diesel vehicles at 7.8% and LPG-powered cars at 1.2%.

At the end of August, Turkey's registered car fleet stood at 18,037,907 vehicles. Diesel cars accounted for 32% of the fleet, followed by gasoline-powered cars at 31% and LPG vehicles at 29.2%.

Hybrid cars made up 5% of the total fleet, while fully electric cars accounted for 2.6%. Vehicles with an unknown fuel type represented 0.2%.

Smaller-engine cars dominate new registrations

Cars with engine sizes of 1,300 cc or less accounted for the largest share of new car registrations during the January-August period.

Of the 600,859 cars registered during the period, 31.5% had engines of 1,300 cc or less, while 16.7% had engines between 1,401 and 1,500 cc and 14.3% had engines between 1,501 and 1,600 cc.

Cars with engines between 1,301 and 1,400 cc accounted for 10.6%, while 7.9% had engines between 1,601 and 2,000 cc. Vehicles with engines of 2,001 cc or larger represented 1%.

Grey remains the most popular car color

Grey was the most common color among cars registered during the January-August period.

Of the 600,859 newly registered cars, 41.5% were grey, 25.5% were white and 12% were black.

Blue cars accounted for 9.9%, followed by green at 5.7%, red at 3.2%, brown at 1.3%, orange at 0.3% and yellow at 0.3%. Other colors accounted for 0.1%. (ILKHA)
